Firestopping

Certified Firestopping Solutions for Complete Building Protection

At Shippy’s Rolling Plains Construction, we are a certified firestop contractor providing consultation, design, and installation services that ensure every structure meets modern life safety standards. Our expert team works with builders, architects, and engineers during the pre-construction phase to select and implement the right firestop systems for long-term safety and code compliance. With extensive training and certifications from industry-leading manufacturers, we deliver trusted solutions for every firestopping need.

What Is Firestopping?

Firestopping is a critical form of passive fire protection used to seal openings and joints in fire-resistance-rated walls or floor assemblies. These systems are designed to maintain the structural fire rating of a building by preventing the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases through penetrations or construction gaps.

By sealing around pipes, conduits, ducts, and other penetrations, firestopping helps ensure that fire-resistant assemblies perform as intended in an emergency. It also closes gaps between fire-rated constructions, such as where walls meet floors, forming a continuous barrier that enhances both occupant safety and building integrity.

The Role of Firestopping in Building Safety

Modern building codes require a combination of active fire protection systems (such as sprinklers and alarms) and passive protection systems (such as firestopping and spray fireproofing). Together, these safeguard structures, reduce damage, and allow safe evacuation. Firestopping is essential for maintaining compartmentalization within a building and preventing fire from spreading quickly between rooms or floors.

Where Firestopping Is Used

Firestop systems are implemented in a wide variety of structural applications, including electrical, mechanical, and plumbing penetrations, unpenetrated openings intended for future use, and re-entries of existing firestops. They are also applied at control or sway joints, junctions between fire-rated walls and floors, and head-of-wall joints where non-load-bearing walls meet floor assemblies. Each system is carefully designed and UL-tested to match the penetrant and performance requirements of the project.

Manufacturer-Certified Expertise

Rolling Plains Construction has earned specialized training and certification from several leading firestop material manufacturers, including Hilti, STI, and 3M. This ensures that our installations meet or exceed UL standards and manufacturer guidelines for fire resistance, smoke control, and durability.

Trusted Nationwide for Fire Life Safety

With decades of experience and a reputation for excellence, Rolling Plains Construction continues to lead in firestopping services that protect lives, property, and infrastructure. Our team combines technical expertise with precision workmanship to deliver safe, reliable, and compliant systems on projects of every scale.

Shippy’s Rolling Plains Construction operates a state-of-the-art steel finishing facility covering 50 acres just outside of Phoenix, with 70,000 square feet under roof to maximize production and eliminate weather delays. Our SSPC-trained quality assurance team inspects each steel member with precision to ensure the highest level of quality and performance.

Our preparation process includes by-hand cleaning (SSPC SP1, SP2, SP3) and abrasive blasting (SSPC SP5 NACE1, SP6 NACE3, SP7 NACE4, SP10 NACE2) for the efficient removal of rust, coatings, and mill scale. Equipped with crane-fed and conveyor-fed wheel machines and a large manual blast area, we can handle steel members of any size or shape quickly and accurately.

We apply advanced protective coating systems including zincs, epoxies, polyurethanes, acrylics, alkyds, and polyureas using products from trusted manufacturers such as Carboline, Isolatek, Sherwin Williams, PPG, Tnemec, and International. Our experienced team selects the best coating to suit each project’s specific environmental conditions and protection requirements.

Our shop-applied intumescent fireproofing method allows complete control over surface preparation, coating, and re-coat times, creating a faster and more efficient process. Work that takes weeks in the field can often be completed within days in our facility, keeping schedules on track and quality consistent.

Rolling Plains Quality Control ensures every application meets or exceeds manufacturer specifications, providing durable, long-term protection for every project.
